Medical logistics is a relatively specialised field and there are not that many courier businesses which offer this as an additional service. However, it forms an indispensable part of a ‘service to society’ as here at Distribusha we shoulder the great responsibility for the delivery of medical equipment, especially to home-based patients, which we will discuss later.

However, there is one area for medical logistics where we are in constant demand, and that is working with the NHS to transport high-value technical equipment between hospitals.

Medical logistics solutions for highly specific medical equipment

Medical equipment is expensive, and especially if it is equipment that is involved in part of the diagnosis / investigative side of medicine. With advancements in modern technology, it is remarkable what they can test for and look for today that they couldn’t even ten years ago.

However, one of the problems is justifying the purchase of highly specialised medical equipment, as often it can end up being underutilised. Distribusha has now become part of a viable and extremely cost-effective solution to the problem, and here’s how:

Hospitals are now sharing specialised technical equipment, such that a hospital may be able to fill up a week’s worth of appointments, and then schedule the next appointments for a month later. That means the equipment can then be used by other hospitals in the meantime, so another hospital may want to use it for two-week periods, and another just a week per month. Consequently, we co-ordinate with each hospital and arrange both collection and delivery of vital equipment to fit in with their patient schedules.

The beauty of this system is we can allocate the right team of up to three members of staff and the appropriate vehicle, and instead of, say 20 patients benefitting from the technology in a month, now 80 patients can, and at minimal extra cost. After all, what costs most money? Medical equipment that is being underutilised…

Not only do we work alongside the NHS as a medical logistics company, but we also work with many private clinics and hospitals, who also book the use of medical equipment on an ‘as and when needed’ basis in order to keep operating costs to a minimum.

What is a medical courier?

One of the easiest ways to describe a medical courier is a courier service that is responsible for transporting all things medical related, except organic matter – blood, organs, medical samples, which are transported by highly specialised services.

We can help deliver medical equipment to doctor’s surgeries, dentists, cometic surgeons, private and NHS hospitals.

We also help those patients who are recovering at home with the delivery of beds, breathing equipment, home dialysis machines, has bottles and general medical equipment. It is a well-known fact that for certain ailments and injuries, patients recuperate faster at home. Because we have an extensive knowledge of medical equipment, many of the items we are responsible for delivering we are also able to fully install, making sure everything is in fully operational condition.

What to look for in a medical courier?

  • The right vehicles – some medical equipment can be large and bulky, as well as heavy. Because this equipment is so expensive, it is important it is safely transported inside an appropriate vehicle.
  • The right staff – here at Distribusha we pride ourselves with having a team of highly experienced medical couriers who know exactly how to transport and install a wide range of medical equipment.
  • Nationwide coverage – there is nowhere in the UK we cannot provide medical courier services to, it is that simple!
